29 Jul Brussels update EMERGENCY MEASURES LIKELY TO BE EXTENDED

The European Commission have convened an extraordinary Agriculture Council meeting on Monday, September 7, in Brussels, to consider amending support measures for the dairy sector in light of the continuing downward pressure on prices. Some agriculture ministers are still calling for an intervention price increase; the EU average milk price for May was down 19% to €30.48/100 kg and in the Baltic countries it is below €25/100kg. The Commission’s recent proposal to extend the current intervention period for SMP and butter from the end of September through to December 31, 2015, could be followed by the introduction of new intervention measures for January-September 2016. The emergency Private Storage Aid scheme is likely to be extended from September 30, 2015 to February 29, 2016.
